How To Make a Delicious Chili Seasoning Mix in 2020

You know how much I like eating spicy dishes. I don’t know about you but everyone in my household just loves extra spiciness in their food. So a little while ago I came up with the perfect ratios of spices for chili seasoning mix and it has been doing wonders for me since then.

I have used it in almost every recipe of mine and my husband has adored its taste.

The good thing about preparing the mix or spices for chili mixes is that they can be made to taste, giving it the spicy touch you want and flavoring with different spices and aromatic herbs to taste.

After several months using our ‘hot spice chili seasoning mix for everything’, I am going to share the formula with you.

Although it is not far from the classic mix which it is widely used in Mexico and in some cities in the southwestern United States, and is known as chili powder or chili powder.

This chili seasoning mix is most commonly used in dishes such as tacos, burritos, meat and vegetable stews, chicken wings, barbecued meats, etc.  The basic mixture of chili powder consists of four spices: chili, cumin, oregano, and garlic powder.

Well, since you can add the spices and aromatic herbs you want to this base so that it has more nuances of flavor, here we explain how to make a delicious chili seasoning for spicy foods.

It can be said that it is a recipe, but basically, it is a list of ingredients that after once prepared, it is only a matter of mixing. I have mentioned what are the proportions that I usually use of each spice to make the mixture.

Although normally I do it by eye, you can adapt this formula to your liking, perhaps you want it to be less spicy or you want to add a citrus touch, for example, with a little dry lemon peel.

As it is very easy to make a mixture of spices for chili seasoning mix, I do not usually prepare a large amount because all the spices are ground, their organoleptic properties are lost faster than if they were whole.

By the way, if you like hot spice mixes and also like to grind them just before seasoning with them, take note of this recipe to make a hot chili seasoning mix.

Ingredients

chili seasoning mix
  • 2 c / c chili powder
  • 2 c / c chipotle chili powder
  • 1 c / c ground cumin
  • 1 c / p of dried oregano
  • 1 c / p of garlic powder
  • 1 c / p of onion powder
  • ½ c / p of freshly ground pepper.

The smoky touch of this spicy chili seasoning mix is provided by the chipotle chili powder, a variety of chili that I like in its different formats.

To make the mixture, simply put all the ground or powdered spices in a jar with a tight lid, although the oregano will probably not be as fine.

Then cover the jar and shake it until all the spices are well mixed. It is convenient that the jar is not full, that its size is greater than the content to be incorporated so that the mixture can be done well.

Once achieved, it is ready to use, do not forget to label the jar indicating what it is, what it contains, and the date on which it was made.

Store this hot spice mix in a closet in a dry place to preserve it from light.

I hope you like it.

The chili powder is a spice widely used in Mexico and in the cities of the Southwest USA (after use to Indian curries). The dishes that are usually seasoned with chili powder are stews of meat, beans, burritos, tacos, hamburgers, chicken wings, barbecued meats, etc.

Although for spicing up this kind of dishes we can use ground chile and add more spices to taste to provide more flavors and aromas of cooking recipes. There are some preparations in the market as well that are known as chili powder that incorporates spice features. I am sure You have seen this product on the spice shelf of supermarkets and specialized stores.

Spices for the chili seasoning mix include the following options. In addition to chili, cumin, Mexican oregano, and garlic powder. It is also true that chili powder can be known as any spice mixture that is mainly composed of chili powder. So we can make our variants from the spices mentioned above to flavor many recipes that like the spicy touch. One of the mixes of spices with chili that I usually make incorporates lemon peel or dried lime, providing a delicious citrus point.

Making our chili powder at home will allow us to make a chili seasoning mix suitable to our tastes, although mainly dry ancho chili should predominate (if you do not find this type of hot pepper, you can find a substitute), the proportion of oregano (which originally It is Mexican oregano), cumin and garlic powder we can vary it according to our preferences.

As I mentioned, to the classic variety of spices that are included in the chili powder You can also incorporate turmeric, coriander, mace , black pepper, cardamom, cloves … And well, making the mixture is as simple as converting all the spices that we use into powder with grinding in a mortar and mixing.

Although you can also make this mixture of spices with a less fine grind for some elaborations, for example, to marinate with spices.

If you need a recipe for chili powder to prepare the chili seasoning mix at home, you can start from four parts of chili and one part of each of the spices to incorporate. If it is the first time you are going to do it, you can calculate four tablespoons of chili, one tablespoon of cumin, one tablespoon of oregano, and one tablespoon of garlic powder. Try it, and from there you can make your variants.
